BEFORE YOU START
Have a glass of water to rinse your brush, a paper plate for a palette, and a paper towel handy! Keep your brushes in the water when you are done using them to keep the paint from drying out on the brushes. Wash your brushes when you are done painting.

INSTRUCTIONS
Background: Start with pure red in the background behind the flower. Towards the edge of the canvas, start adding streaks of black to darken the edges to create a vignette. Dry.

Flower: How to draw the flower:
Using the smaller brush and brown, draw a circle off the edge of the canvas.
Using yellow paint, draw a row of petals all the way around the circle, leaving a small gap between each. The petal shapes are two parentheses (). Keep your petals a similar size. These become the background petals. Fill each petal with yellow and streaks of red.

Make a second row of petals, the foreground petals. These will be yellow and white.

Center: Use the stippling method to paint the center (tapping your brush). The center of the flower is like a target sign. Black on the outside edge, red+brown, then switch to gold and then black in the center again.

Slightly blend the two colors (the rings of the target) together for a brownish appearance.

Petal Shading: Use the small brush and red + brown mix to add a shading over the background petals where they meet the center of the flower and behind the foreground petals. Add a few streaks to the foreground petals for the character.

Petal Highlights: Clean the brush and use white paint to add a few streaks of highlights to some of the foreground petals.

Final Details: Use a clean/dry bristle brush and NOT a lot of gold paint to dry the brush on rustic streaks to the background. Don’t be afraid to brush over your flower too (this is optional though).
Write “Simplicity” in chalk on the desired location and then use white paint to paint over

Use the bristle brush and a small amount of gold to dab texture onto the center of the flower.
